SUSTAINABILITY & WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT IT?

Here at Food From The Roots, we want to positively promote and share a variety of cultural recipes to our buyers, whilst still keeping the well-being of our planet in mind. Many people are unaware of the environmental impact that cooking and food production can have on the environment. Our cookbook aims to educate others about both the variety of cultural foods across the world, and how to reduce our impact on the environment.

The process of creating and supplying food and ingredients across the world can be very harmful. For example, food production is a major contributor to climate change and is responsible for over a quarter (26%) of global greenhouse gas emissions. Mass food production also consumes immense amounts of water (78% of global freshwater) and requires large areas of land for agriculture and livestock farming.

Livestock, particularly cattle, contribute significantly to climate change, as animals like cows produce methane, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere and intensifies the greenhouse effect.

Additionally, around 31% of emissions come directly from on-farm productions. High food miles also contribute to environmental harm, as transporting food over long distances increases emissions from vehicles, further raising the carbon footprint.

How does food production affect our planet?

How do we solve this?

Helping our planet become a better place environmentally is a long journey, but we believe our product can help reduce the impact that cooking has on the environment. It offers creative ways to use leftover ingredients, minimize food waste, and discover local businesses where you can enjoy culturally diverse dishes. Additionally, we aim to encourage purchasing ingredients from local vendors, which helps lower food miles and supports the community.

For information about shopping locally, check out https://shoplocaluk.org/ . They are a nationwide campaign that offers information on local shops and business, helping to promote local businesses, and minimize CO2 emissions from people driving out of town to large shopping centres. Campaigns like this help us become more sustainable.

Most importantly, sustainability is a shared responsibility, it takes all of us working together. With your support, we can slow the effects of climate change and take meaningful steps to revive our planet.
